Help Please!!! I Need To Summarize This Paragraph And Don’t Know How. ?

I need to summarize this paragraph and don’t know how. Just started school after 17 years of break and don’t remember ever summarizing any article. Never had to do any in bilingual classes. Please help!!
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that leads to the breakdown of the cartilage in joints. In people with osteoarthritis, exercise helps maintain good joint health, manage symptoms and prevent functional decline. But studies have shown that the benefits of a structured exercise program are short-lived. The beneficial effects usually fade soon after participation in the program ends. The occupational therapy program in this study was designed to educate osteoarthritis patients about joint protection, proper body mechanisms, activity pacing, and environmental barriers. The participants of the current study were divided into two groups. The first group participated in a structured exercise program and the occupational therapy program. The second group participated in the same exercise program, but received health education in place of the occupational therapy. Only the group that engaged in occupational therapy increased the intensity of
physical activity at the end of the study.

Why won’t the doctors give me the medication I need?
And what if it went on like that for several pages? Do you think this would make any improvements in mental health care services, like maybe doctors listening to their patients and giving them the medication that they need?
Six years I have tried to get medication for disorders I have been diagnosed with. There are two medications, one or the other, they could prescribe, a pill or medical hemp, but they won’t prescribe either one and so I have no medication and I continue to suffer. I pray and I do other things, but I still have the disorders and I may have more that are not diagnosed yet. Why won’t they help me?
I am not going to go on a shooting rampage but I can imagine some of these people who have maybe had similar issues with their doctors not listening to them and not prescribing proper medication. They have these disorders that could be treated and medicated but no one’s listening to what they are saying about how severe the disorder is when they are not sitting in the doctor’s office thinking and hopeful they are going to be helped, but when they are on their own and when injustices are done against them and everything is going wrong and the stress is going off the charts and so is the brain chemistry in a wrong direction.
I have talked to several other people with a range of mental health and physical medical problems who have told me they have had the same problem with doctors not listening and not giving the right medication or not giving any medication at all and leaving them to suffer in pain. And that this has gone on for years.
And then there are the ones who do the opposite and over medicate their patients.
Six years I have tried and six years the doctors don’t listen or read what is in my medical record to prescribe the right medication. I report to them the truth, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t sleep around, I don’t lie, I don’t steal, I am follow of God, and so forth, but I have suffered a lot of trauma in childhood and adulthood and I have these other problems and they diagnose me with these disorders, they know I have them, and then they won’t prescribe the medication I need and unfortunately, the mental health clinics are severly under-funded and over-populated with patients that the therapists over overwhelmed and can’t help any of their clients, and so I don’t get medication or therapy.
I am not the only one this is happening to and my brain chemistry surges are not as bad as what some other people have.
Do you think such an event would have affect on medical or mental health professionals to open their ears and minds and listen to their patients?
Do you think it would help the funding situation with the government agencies and the citizens?

What Are Your Thoughts On This??

I live in MD and recently a bill has been proposed that will have the public school system pay for the physical, occupational and speech therapies of special education students who are currently being homeschooled. I am curious as to what others…both in the special ed and home school community think.
As the mother of an autistic child, and someone who has done a fair amount of parent’s advocate work, I generally discourage most families from homeschooling because in doing so they will loose all the ancillary therapy services they can get from the public schools. Few families are in a financial position to pay for these from private sources and insurance coverage for them is spotty. Also, special education budgets shrink every year, so the addtional cost is a factor.
As a homeschooler (of my other child) I feel that until the schools are willing to let my daughter join the drama club or play school sponsered sports, then no one group should be given special treatment.

Is It Ethical For A Doctor To Do This?

A patient had a valve replacement on his heart. He’s been doing physical therapy to make his heart stronger for months now. He’s doing really well, but every so often he has a relapse and his numbers go down. Well the patient doesnt want to do therapy any more and wants to check himself out of the clinic he’s at. In order to check himself he must have the doctors signature. However, the doctor knows his patient wants to go home but is avoiding meeting with him because he doesnt think his patient is ready to leave even though its against the patients wishes. is this ethical?

How Would You Feel About This Job Situation?

I work for a physical therapy clinic where I was hired on as “PRN” or “as needed” to fill in for another woman who works there full time, but wants to begin selling real estate. I work about 2-3 hours per day (which is guaranteed) but am also sort of on-call.
Often I get calls asking me to go to other clinics in the area, and have driven as far as 1.5 hours to go to a clinic to work. The company pays my mileage, and by doing this I make decent pay, but I hate the position I’m in. Because I know that I *could* say no when they call and ask me to go fill in at different clinics, but it will only hurt me in the long run, because they will quit calling me, and I won’t make any extra money. So I feel pretty much obligated.
Up to this point, every time they have called me to go somewhere else that is within reason, I’ve gone. I want to be reliable, so that if a job opens up, they will think of me first.
Well about 2 weeks ago, I set up a an appointment for a cut and color with my stylist (who is difficult to get an appointment with) for this coming Friday. Today, the woman who I work with called and asked me to fill in for her Friday morning and I told her that I couldn’t because I had a hair appointment, and that I had scheduled it a couple weeks ago.
Well one of my managers (who is over all the secretaries in our area) called asking me to fill in on Friday morning also. She didn’t speak to me, although I was standing right there, but to the woman I work with, who informed her that I had a hair appointment and that I couldn’t do it- at which point the manager asked if there was any way I could reschedule it!
I was a little appalled, and said that it couldn’t, and apologized.
One of the other girls sitting there who heard this conversation sided with me. However when I told my boyfriend about this he thought I should have agreed to try to reschedule. But, this is where I stand on this.
First, this is an hourly job with no benefits that expects me to basically be on call and ready to go somewhere to fill in at the drop of a hat. It is not a career, nor something I intend to be doing for any length of time. And the fact that the manager thought it was ok to ask me to re-arrange my plans? That bothers me. I have a life too, outside of this job.
While I know that a hair appointment isn’t nearly anything as pressing as a doctor’s appointment, it is still something I had scheduled that I wasn’t able to do partially because of this job and they should respect that.
So.. what’s your take on this? What would you have done? Serious answers only, please.

Do You Think This Is A Funny Idea?

I work at a physical therapy clinic and they said we could dress up for Halloween tomorrow as long as it is tasteful. So, I thought about wearing a solid colored scrub uniform and pinning a bunch of socks on it and going as “static cling” What do you think? Dumb or funny? Or if you have another suggestion let me know!

Bracelets ‘useless’ in arthritis
Magnetic wrist strap
Magnetic devices have been used for arthritis for centuries
Copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps are useless for relieving pain in people with arthritis, say University of York researchers.
In the first tightly controlled trial to look at both alternative therapies, there was no benefit to their use for pain or stiffness.
All 45 patients tested a copper bracelet, two different magnetic wrist straps, and a demagnetised version.
An arthritis charity said people should not waste their money on the therapies.
Study leader Stewart Richmond, a research fellow in the Department of Health Sciences, said there had only been one other randomised controlled trial – comparing the treatment with placebo – on copper bracelets and that was done in the 1970s.
Although there is a big public appetite for non-drug treatments from arthritis patients, we would not encourage them to spend a lot of money on products for which there is very little scientific evidence

The market – particularly in magnetic devices which can cost £25 and £65 for the wrist straps – is worth billions of dollars worldwide.
In the trial, 45 people aged 50 or over, who were all diagnosed as suffering from osteoarthritis wore each of the four devices in a random order over a 16-week period.
They were all ineffective in terms of pain, stiffness and physical function, the researchers reported in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine.
Placebo effect
“It appears that any perceived benefit obtained from wearing a magnetic or copper bracelet can be attributed to psychological placebo effects,” said Mr Richmond.
“People tend to buy them when they are in a lot of pain, then when the pain eases off over time they attribute this to the device.
“However, our findings suggest that such devices have no real advantage over placebo wrist straps that are not magnetic and do not contain copper.”
He said the marketing of the devices was often to vulnerable elderly people.
Jane Tadman from the Arthritis Research Campaign said although many people with arthritis wore copper bracelets, there was no current research that supports their use.
“Although there is a big public appetite for non-drug treatments from arthritis patients, we would not encourage them to spend a lot of money on products for which there is very little scientific evidence,” she added.
The charity is in the process of compiling a report on the effectiveness of complementary therapies and arthritis.

I need help to determine if this is the right career for me…Do you like your jobs? Is it exciting or does it become mundane after a while? What age groups do you primarily work with? What is your hourly wage? Do you work in a hospital or clinic? Do you wish you became a straight OT or PT instead?
