How do I become a Physical Therapist with a business degree?

Question by Hernandez1313: How do I become a Physical Therapist with a business degree?
What do you major in in college if you want to be a physical therapist? I am 6 classes shy of having a bachelors degree in business management but I have recently decided I want to do physical therapy. Not to mention, my gpa is no where good enough to get in to a masters physical therapy program right now. What should I do? take classes to be a PT assistant? or just take the required classes to get into a masters program ? and what would those classes be? please help

Luckily for us, Physical Therapy schools love students that have diverse bachelors degrees, like business management (you) and marketing/design (me). First, continue finishing up your bachelors degree. Since you have six classes left of that, I would advise you to spread out those six classes into two semsters, and take a few physical therapy prereq. courses in conjuction with finishing your undergrad. There are several prereq. courses needed for physical therapy, but it really depends on the school in particular you are looking for. Most colleges want to see 1 year of general chemistry, 1 year of physics, 1 year of anatomy/physiology, and 1 semester of stats. Don’t take classes to become a PT assistant — that would be taking a huge step down since you’re so close to having a bachelors degree. It would also save you time because it is a 2 year A.A degree to become a PT assistant, while it would only take you 1 year of prereqs in order to get into a physical therapy school, which would give you either a masters or doctorate degree. And don’t worry about your bachelors gpa too much. The most important part is your prereq gpa — make sure you get B’s or higher in all science prereq courses. Also, volunteer and/or work in a physical therapy setting. It may seem like a lot to take in, but just take one step at a time and before you know it, you’ll be ready to apply to your dream graduate school. Good luck!! Here is a list of all physical therapy schools in the US:

Can I open a physical therapy clinic as a owner not the actual therapist?

Question by : Can I open a physical therapy clinic as a owner not the actual therapist?
I have worked in a therapy clinic so I understand the business but I want to be clear about owning a clinic and just hiring some therapist.

Bottom Line Answer: YES

Option 1: You own the practice and hire therapist to work for you. You do all the advertising, scheduling, accounting, payroll, taxes, etc.

Option 2: You own the practice and rent out space to therapist. You may also give them the option of you doing all their books and scheduling for a fee.

Option 3: Go into business with several therapist as partners. Their part is the therapy work, your part is the administrative side of the business. Both sides are needed and this allows for each to focus on their strenghts and to not be burdened down doing a side of the business they may down right hate.

Hope this helps..

Can an occupational therapist be an owner of a physical therapy practice in NJ?

Question by : Can an occupational therapist be an owner of a physical therapy practice in NJ?
It looks like PT practices have to be owned by PT’s. The underlying issue is that the licensed providers of PT services (PT’s) are the only people bound by legal and ethical constraints and that is why they can be the only owners. In addition, no lay person may benefit by profit sharing/fee splitting. So, can an occupational therapist practice in a physical therapy practice? Can an occupational therapist own part of the PT practice?

It needs to be a PLLC. So to have PT and OT in the same practice, both need to be owners but it does not matter what percentage of an owner. It could be 90% OT and 10% PT ownership or anything else.

Sports Physical Therapist?

I am very interested in medicine, but I do not think I could handle the rigorous training and studying to become an MD. Sports has always been a huge part of my life, and I have always been interested in therapy so I just put two and two together and figured out I might actually enjoy this work. I have done some research and found out I may need a lot of pre-requisites to get into exercise science. I live in NYC and I am currently attending a college that doesn’t have my major. I can transfer to two colleges in Brooklyn that offer it, but I know the college I’m attending now has a better learning environment so I was wondering if I could possibly take all the required courses here and then transfer to one of the colleges in Brooklyn and declare my major there. I don’t want to DPT I just want to specialize in sports so I have a higher advantage when it comes time for job placement than someone who just has a general education of PT.
