Question by livelife: I want to go to massage therapy school but…..?
I have bad credit due to some hospital bills, where I work they don’t have insurance. My parents won’t cosign for me to get the loan to go to this private school for massage.I recently asked them to cosign for me to take an insurance course and they did sign for me, I finished the school got my state certificate and changed my mind, now i want to go to massage therapy school. The owner charges 7 thousand plus you have a lot of other expenses too, like a table, books etc.My car has a lot of miles on it and is a 96 chev. The school of my choice is over an hour one way.The school won’t give me a loan but just half the money at 18% interest. I am 25 , I will be paying for this til I am 40.My parents will not support me. Does anyone know of a school I could go to close to statesville nc that isn’t so expensive. My mom wants me to do physical therapy at a community college, says i will learn some massage there, i want no part of it. Help!
Actually this is my daughter. As a mom it really hurts me to see her take the wrong roads and another thing it falls back on me financially. I only wrote it to get answers for me about her, thanks everyone

Paying off student loans for forever is part of the american dream! It’s how we get to where we want to be. Around $ 7,000 is about average cost for a decent massage therapy program that will give you a quality education and prepare you for state licensure. Your bad credit shouldn’t hinder you from getting an educational loan.Actually, at 25 you should qualify for all kinds of federal and state grants (free money you don’t have to pay back!!) to put you through school (especially if your income has been at the lower end of the scale) provided the school you want to attend is state accredited. If not, I would try to find a school that is state accredited. I was 23 when I decided to get off my butt and get an education so I wouldn’t have to live at home forever. I worked my tail off for three months, held down 2 full time jobs. Then packed my car and headed across the country for massage school. I live in Illinois and went to school in Salt Lake City. Good Luck! If you need anymore info feel free to contact me.
P.S. Why do you worry what your parents think? If you feel this is the right career move for you, then do it! If I listened that much to my dad I might have actually gotten a 4 year degree and a 9-5 job! lol He also told me to stay home longer to save more money before heading off to school. I knew if I did that then I’d get side-tracked and never leave to go to school and still be in the same rut. I’ve been a practicing therapist for 9 years now and I’m very financially stable making full time money for part time work. What’s nice about this work is that it’s very flexible. You can work for yourself whether it be out of your house or space you rent elsewhere or you could be an employee somewhere. Your options are limitless as far as opportunity….many aspects to specialize in…children, sports, prenatal, spa….it’s endless what you can do with training in massage therapy. I personally work with chiropractors. I have for 8 years now, but I’ve also recently trained in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage and I’m looking to start working out of my home and focus on this work. The hours are flexible and the pay can be great too.
Sorry for all the rambling…I’m just very passionate about my career. It’s more than just a career for me, it’s also my hobby. I totally geek out about massage and bodywork, I’m such an information junkie!! lol
A legitimate therapist is a massage therapist not a masseuse. The job market is flexible and easy to get into. And, you can learn technique and basic ability while in school and do very well once working in the real world. Massage therapy helps alot of people where physical therapy cannot.

Does A Prestigious Premedical School Give You Leeway Into Med School If You Don’t Have The Grades?
I attend a small liberal arts college known for high acceptance rates into medical school however I am not doing exceptionally well, which is what is required for med school. It is extremely expensive and I am paying for my own education. I have the option of transferring to a school with a lot more career oriented options such as physical and occupational therapy and other health professions. From there I would like to pursue a career then apply to med school. Is it really worth it to stay at a school were my gpa is ok and has the potential of getting worse in comparison to somewhere cheaper where I know I can maintain a better one? Should i salvage my gpa while I can?
School Won’t Follow Iep On Tuesdays Because My Daughter Has Medical Appointments.?
Last May we signed an IEP for my daughter giving her 3.5 hours of special instruction per day to be delivered by a special-ed teacher or a parapro.
They had in their documents, and knew very well at the time that my daughter does not arrive at school until noon on Tuesdays because she has physical and occupational therapy. She has had this schedule for the past two school years. They also have documented that it is doctor ordered and must occur in the morning, early in the week (She is hypotonic).
We called another IEP last week to adjust her goals and the Director of Special Education of the county was sitting at the table when we arrived (ambush?) and proceeded to inform us that, by law, the school did not have to provide her service hours on Tuesdays because we “choose” to take her out of school. So she will not receive any services on Tuesday (even after she arrives!) and we have been told we are free to take her work home and teach it ourselves (which is what we did all last year).
I fail to see how we “choose” it when it is doctor ordered and related to one of her disabilities.
I asked him to cite the law for me which he hasn’t done yet.
How do I fight this??? I don’t want my child missing 20% of her education. Thanks for your help!
P.S. The school doesn’t provide her PT/OT because it is not educationally necessary. So we get it done privately. Again, it is doctor ordered.
Advice On Going Back To School?
I have a two month old son and would like to better myself by going further with my education. I made good grades in school but got into the partying scene and did not graduate. I did get my G.E.D. I am 21 now and am raising my son by myself with no father in his life so I would like to financially be capable of doing it alone. I am interested in physical or occupational therapy assistant and possibly down the road a physical or occupational therapist but need to now how to get started and make it happen. Maybe online courses with having a baby even though I know alot of it will be hands on training. Advice please?
Do You Have To Go To School To Be A Physical Therapy Assistant?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 24, 2010
Oh kay, I’m a senior, I’ll be 17 next month, like that matters ha. And I’ve been thinking about being a Physical Therapy Assistant.. as my career.. So I’ve been doing so much research and it’s honestly getting annoying cause every school I find is online or in another state, so I was starting to wonder if you even have to go to school to be a Physical Therapy Assistant? I live in Pennsylvania if that helps at all for any reason..
Ok, So A Little Bit Of Advice For A High School Senior Please?
OK, well i’m 17 and at the point in my life when I have to figure out what I want to do with my life. I’m technically a senior high school, but I’m dual-enrolling full time at the community college (been homeschooled since Kindergarten, dual-enrolled since the 10th grade). I’m working on my 2 year A.A. General Transfer degree. After I get that here, I want to transfer to a 4 year university to get my Bachelors in something. The thing is, i don’t know what to get it in. I like math, so I was thinking accounting, but my dad says “you don’t want a desk job, too boring, doesn’t pay much” (he majored in accounting). i’m taking intro to Psychology now and I’m at the top of my class, it’s interesting and I like it, but dad says “you would have to get your Masters in it and then get a teaching job, not many other choices for that, but it would make a good minor”. he thinks i should go to a tech school (like my older brother and sister who are now in tech schools becoming a fire fighter/EMT – bro and LPN – sis), or go into a profession like Physical Therapy (pays great) or something media related (many job openings). also going into the Air Force is something he’s wanted all 3 of his kids to do.
i mean what do i do? the only thing i really want to be in life is a wife and mother (which is when he mentioned Southeastern University “bridal college”. we personally know over 20 people who have gone there and came home with a wife/husband).
so i’m kinda at a loss here. i want some kind of degree but don’t really know why or how I’ll use it. and i don’t want to go to college just to get married.
other people have told me “you’ve got time to figure it out”, my parents tell me “they aren’t the ones paying for your education you need to figure it out and soon”

Career Ideas For A High School Senior?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 21, 2010
I am going to be a senior this year in high school. I am starting to think of career options. I want to definitely do something in the medical field. I am very interested in alternative medicine such as Kinesology or Chiropractic. I have also considered Physical Therapy. What other career options are out there i could look into?
Pell Grants Or Other Help To Go Back To School?
My 20 year old daughter is looking to go back to school to continue her education. I am hearing different things on the grants now available to return to college if you choose. She already has her massage therapy degree however that doesn’t seem like it’s a great field any longer. She is now looking into Physical therapy. Has anyone looked into any of these grants now available or have any insight as to where we can look to get the ball rolling. I told her to go to the school and talk to the financial advisor but I would also like to be educated on the different options before doing that. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Lots Of Withdrawals On My Transcript…ok For Grad School?
Over the years in and out of college I’ve had some really rough patches…not in terms of grades, but in terms of life…and having to withdraw from classes.
I have one semester where it was *all* withdrawals (had to have surgery); withdrew from half classes in following semester (physical therapy from surgery wasn’t going well and I couldn’t get around, do therapy, *and* keep up in classes); another where I withdrew from half my classes (had pneumonia and almost died).
And then a couple other classes in other semesters (one at a time) where I was just overloaded and withdrew from one class to end up not sacrificing the others (along with my grades).
My GPA is decent (3.63) and I’m a diligent student. I’m just wondering how this will look to grad schools? Or possibly med school? I want to continue on with my education, but while surfing various college forums noticed several different posts where people are concerned about 2 or 3 withdraws. It never occurred to me that they would be viewed as “bad”. Most cases I just didn’t have a choice (medically); the rest I chose for what I considered the best option in my education/situation at the time.
Will this hurt my chances of grad or med school?
Thanks in advance!
