What should I do for pain management?

Question by : What should I do for pain management?
I am 22 years old and have been dealing with severe pain in my neck and back for months. I’m not sure what the cause is. I have a very physically demanding job and and i’ve also been popping my neck and back for as long as i can remember. My neck also clicks during normal movement. The pain hit a point of unbearable so i finally went in to a small local clinic since I don’t have a primary care doctor. I was put on prednisone which didn’t help me any so they had me do a ct scan which came back clean so they sent me to physical therapy. I went in to P/T and they did a full evaluation of me and they said based upon their evaluation i they didnt even want to touch me and that i had serious issues going on and that I needed to get to an Ortho immediately. I’m having an MRI done tomorrow. But the soonest I could get an appointment with the ortho is a month out. I’m not sure what to do for pain management for at least the time being. I’m currently taking lortab 7.5/500 three times daily. Day to day my pain is about a nine and each pill brings the pain down to a seven and wears off within two hours. I’m just really confused on what to do. Are injections any good? Any other options and where should I go? Should I just go back to the small local clinic?

Does anyone know of a good inpatient pain management program?

Question by Susan, too much pain, too long: Does anyone know of a good inpatient pain management program?
I had a botched back surgery 12 years ago. I have been seeing a pain management specialist for 10 years and I have an implanted pump with a catheter that delivers medication directly into my spine in the area of the nerves that are damaged. I have completely lost the ability to have a life and I know that I need physical therapy and physchological counseling but in the small town I live in they are not available and I can’t drive myself back and forth from the closest city. Any one know of a place in Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Tennesee, and other states close to these? These would be closest to home but I am willing to go anywhere necesssary. I need an inpatient program because I will be there alone. None of my family can rearrange things in order to be with me, but I need help now. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

What will my pain management doctor do next?

Question by ♫Orion’s Mommy♫: What will my pain management doctor do next?
I’ve been to a pain management doctor for my scoliosis and the first visit he put me in a physical therapy program and gave me a script for some patches. The PT made my back worse if it did anything at all and the patches dont work. He said I was too young for pain killers but I need them badly. Whats the next step? if the pt and patches didnt work will he reconsider pain killers?

Ask him again in a very mature way, no pleading or whining.

Tell him he ought to give you a chance, and if necessary, you’ll even submit to random urine tests to prove you’re not going to abuse the medication. Tell him your quality of life is suffering, you’re no longer able to enjoy social activities or babysit or work at whatever part time job you have. Tell him your sleep is suffering. Tell him you’re simply willing to do whatever it takes – you’ll comply – for him to give you a chance. Say you deserve a chance.

I understand what you’re going through, sweetie. I have serious chronic pain myself – nerve damage from lupus – as well as several kidney infections every year from a complication of a birth defect I was born with. I’ve been battling with doctors for years over pain management issues. It makes me absolutely furious when I’ve been treated like nothing more than a drug seeker.

Unfortunately, for everyone of us genuine sufferers of chronic pain, there are a hundred people who fake pain and/or injure themselves to get pills, people who “doctor-hop” to get multiple prescriptions, and people who try to get prescriptions so they can sell the drugs on the street. These assholes have ruined it for people like us.

I had given up long ago to try asking for pain medication. Unfortunately, I started drinking too much to numb the pain, and overdosed daily on Tylenol (like 12-20 per day, and you know you don’t get high on Tylenol). I knew I was likely doing serious damage to my liver, but I didn’t care. I cared more about my quality of life (which means having less pain and not begging god to kill me every day) than I did about quantity of life. In other words, I would take 2 years of living with less pain over living many years with severe pain every day.

I finally ended up in the hospital with acute pancreatitis, and I told them the truth of what I had been doing. Finally they took me seriously, and did a rush order on getting me into the pain clinic at the hospital. Later, my family doctor apologised to me for not helping me better. He had given me a real bad attitude before.

So now I’m on good painkillers, and they are strictly controlled. I did the same things I advised you to say to your doctor. He was nervous, especially that I had now created a past with alcohol abuse (by the way, I don’t believe I’m an alcoholic, no matter what anyone says. But I don’t drink much now, anyway).

So anyway, I empathise. It is horrible being looked down on by condescending doctors. I have always wished that every doctor have to experience a day of the pain people like you and me suffer. They would quickly get the point.

good luck.

Pain management what do I ask?

Question by : Pain management what do I ask?
My general dr sent out a note that she won’t be prescribing opiates at her office to anyone anymore and said to seek pain management elsewhere. I called the list of Drs in town and no one is taking patients. I’m left with pain clinic option. I’m 33 f perforated L4/L5 disc, spinal stenosis, and in active physical therapy, where I have discovered to have scoliosis also. I have my dr records, MRI reports and phys therapy and neurological assessment no bad marks on my record. I went to call the only pain clinic 30 miles away, they are closed for 2 weeks. I run out of rx in 2 weeks. I looked up another one. 40 miles away and am going to give them a call. I just don’t know the questions to ask the lady on the phone. Nervous about the whole thing. Never been to a pain clinic and ice been dealing with hostile receptionists the past few weeks, putting my medical record together.. Any help please? For someone who has been there done that?

I dont think I would be going back to that doc for anything is she just announced this and didnt offer to atleast give one refill until you can get in at another doctor. A pain clinic will much better suit your needs than a general practice doctor will anyway. They will be able to try different meds that you didnt even know about (there are actually many medications that are used for other things that can also treat pain besides the good ole perc….codene, etc) I would explain to them that you need to be seen in the next two weeks and express your anxiety over the situation…..exlain to them that you know it is not their problem and you hope they can help you.

Pain Management – How many of you have been called in for pill counts?

Question by QATFY: Pain Management – How many of you have been called in for pill counts?
I have been in pain mgmt for over 6 months and have yet to be called in (knock on wood). No, I do not take my meds as prescribed as somedays my pain is much worse. I had to go to the ER last week b/c I could not walk due to the pain in my upper back (severe scoliosis and disc disease). I called the clinic and they OK’d me to go as they have in the past. I had to miss my monthly Physical Therapy appointment with the clinic today b/c my car’s transmission went out, I have only missed one appointment since my treatment began. Will this raise the red flags, I wonder? I am currently on 20 mg Oxycontin per day but sometimes, I take up to 40 mg. They took me off Ultram, which was used for my breakthrough pain and gave me an extra 15 Oxys (I was dianosed with epilepsy and ultram lowers seizure treshold) and that has messed me up as ultram really helped with my pain.

So, how many of you have been called in for random pill counts? Please don’t flame me, thanks :)

Should I pursue a career in physical therapy or Management Information Systems (computer study)?

Question by Marissa C: Should I pursue a career in physical therapy or Management Information Systems (computer study)?
Im going into my sophomore year of college and ive been taking a few business classes (for accounting) but now i feel like accounting could be very boring. I want a job i can wake up every morning and want to go to work and also have some money. I like working with computers and systems like databases and excel. however i feel like that could be stressful and boring after a while. Im also interested in physical therapy or sports and exercise science. Im just afraid of how tough the classes will be. and i want want to figure out in a couple years that its too tough for me to carry on my studies.

so do you have any suggestions? or questions i should be asking myself. Also if you have any information on the following careers i would love to hear more about it.

Im just feeling like i need to pick a major soon (im undeclared) because i dont want to feel like i am wasting my time at college. Please help!

Answer by Meg D
Business is more or less a general degree now since you can go into pretty much most industry. However, without a specialized field, it’d be hard to land a job. I would suggest accounting or computer science. Computers are still hot even in this economy. Accounting can always land you a job. The more specialized you become, the easier to get a job. But it’d also be harder to change careers later.

Does anyone know of any pain management clinics in Baton Rouge or surrounding area take self pay patients?

Question by miscottmorg: Does anyone know of any pain management clinics in Baton Rouge or surrounding area take self pay patients?
I have a chronic back ailment and have lost my insurance after 6 years of treatment , mostly with medicine and physical therapy. I moved home to Louisiana after losing my inurance and going thru a divorce, finding myself with less money, alot of pain ,no help with the bills and doctors telling me to go to a pain clinic . The ones i have talked to so far are either too expensive (600 monthly) or insurance only.

One place you could check is thru the city health dept to see if they offer a free health clinic that also offers Pain Management services.

Another place is to check with some of the Medical Schools close by to see if they might be of some help.

I have the link to a site that may be able to help you find more information. It’s the link to a group for those with chronic pain. If you would like the information on that group please e-mail or IM me off site any time with the subject link to Chronic Pain Group so that I will know what it’s in regards to.
