Should I go into Physical Therapy as a career?

Question by : Should I go into Physical Therapy as a career?
I’m interested in physical therapy, but I’m not really good at math or chemistry. But my dad’s a D.O., and I really like his job. Should I major in it? If you are a Physical Therapist, what do you like/dislike about your career and do you have any tips for becoming a PT ?

Do you think I will get into University of Maryland-College Park?

Question by : Do you think I will get into University of Maryland-College Park?
I really would like to go here for Business Management.
Stats:
3.65 weighted GPA (Many honors classes and 1 AP class)
26 on the ACT
Obviously these aren’t the best, but I have many additions that make me a well rounded applicant:
National Honors Society
Distinguished Honor roll in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
Ranked in the top 20% in a National Financial Capability Challenge
Chief Editor of Literary Magazine
Owner, Founder, and Operator of a Landscaping Business (pretty successful too)
Volunteer at a Physical Therapy clinic
Patrol Leader and Quarter Master in Boy Scouts
Class President
Varsity Baseball
Basketball League
Leader of a religious youth group
What do you guys think?
Thanks!!

EVERY university has its “admissions requirements” clearly posted on their website.
p.s. Colleges do NOT accept “weighted” GPA’s. Un-weighted ONLY – “weighting” is used for class ranking purposes only, relative to you comparatively against your classmates at your school, but otherwise it is useless. Think about it – why should a silly course like AP Art count more than a difficult course like a language or a math class?

Josh,
You sound very intelligent. Why have you not visited the website at University of Maryland-College Park and compared yourself to the typical student admitted? They have student profiles and you can see how you match up. This seems within the realm of your skills & abilities.
Universities are composed of various colleges. It’s the college that you’re aiming for, not the university really. For instance, you may be an ideal candidate for the College of Arts & Humanities at University of Maryland-College Park but get turned down flat for the Engineering College there. Why? Think about it… So you want to gear your admission towards the particular COLLEGE within the university. It makes a huge difference on whether or not you’re seen as a good, very good or poor candidate.
You sound like a very good nursing candidate to me Josh however ~ University of Maryland-College Park bases admission decisions on a variety of factors. The University of Maryland does not grant admission based solely on a grade point average. The admission process is rigorous and individualized and involves over 25 different factors in the review. Typically successful freshman applicants present a transcript that reflects academic rigor in the curriculum (some honors classes) and proficiency within the demanding schedule (mostly A’s and B’s).
The high school grade-point average (GPA) accounts for approximately two-thirds of the decision. The remaining one-third is based on other factors. What are those “other factors?” Your work experience, personal statement and entrance essay, extracurricular activities are some.
Admission to University of Maryland-College Park is “Moderately Difficult.” More than 75% of freshmen were in the top 50% of their high school class and scored over 1010 on the SAT I or over 18 on the ACT; 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1250 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1400.
It would certainly seem that you have a very good chance of being accepted to the general college but keep in mind that the admission standards for their Honors College and Scholars Program are really quite strenuous.

Will I ever be able to go back into heavy exercising?
Posted by admin in Clinic Management on March 19, 2012
Question by CC Curious: Will I ever be able to go back into heavy exercising?
I was injured in car accidents. In one accident I think I was knocked out, and began to vomit profusely. I had to be observed. I don’t even remember my head hitting the dash, as was evidenced by the red mark on my face. Now years later the injuries can be seen, so far they can only see 2 degenerated discs, I have found that osteo arthritis can take at least 10 years to develop, I have also been told I have arthritis, scar tissue, and at one time been told I can’t exercise because it could flare up my muscles; I suspect that the discs and scar tissues are flaring up the muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons. The pain is up and down my spine, neck vertebrae, and causes headaches. I am being referred to physical therapy and pain management clinic and having a follow up with my doctor.
Those times when I exercise these days, it seems to make it worse, and so does the weather. But there were times I exercised in certain periods over the years and felt fairly good….
This is a chronic condition and will probably last me my whole life.
But I have read that if I strengthen the muscles enough, they will keep the joints from rubbing together (and in turn I am hoping keep them from pressing on other parts like muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues). My problem is I have so many days I can’t exercise because of the pain, fear of the pain, and the aftermath of the pain. Sometimes I do something that I think should not hurt me, and it does!!! :’( And my body sprains so very easily. The pain gets so back it makes me sick and have migraines and tension headaches and zaps away a lot of my life when it gets really bad. Sometimes it feels like I’m not even really living.
Will I ever be able to have my life back and do martial arts and practice gymnastics like I used to? If I strengthen my back and stomach muscles enough, wouldn’t that give me the strength to stretch my body out to relieve some of the pain? Do I have to live my life through the meds all time

Question by celeb: I’m undecided if i might want to look into the Physical Therapy career. What should i study in college?
I am going to be a senior in high school and i don’t know what i want to do (which probably isn’t that abnormal). Physical Therapy has always interested me, but i still don’t know for sure. If i got my bachelors degree in something else, say mechanical engineering, would it be very difficult for me to change to physical therapy? Or could i just go to grad school for PT?

Nursing Into Physical Therapy? Good Option?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on March 1, 2010
I’ve been thinking about both professions and I really like both of them. I just want to know If i do go for a Bach. for nursing and perhaps try to apply for a grad school for physical therapy would be a good choice like a possible career path? I know I would need to take a couple of extra courses they require to be a PT but I would do it if I had to. I’m not sure but I would just get feedback on this.
Does A Prestigious Premedical School Give You Leeway Into Med School If You Don’t Have The Grades?
I attend a small liberal arts college known for high acceptance rates into medical school however I am not doing exceptionally well, which is what is required for med school. It is extremely expensive and I am paying for my own education. I have the option of transferring to a school with a lot more career oriented options such as physical and occupational therapy and other health professions. From there I would like to pursue a career then apply to med school. Is it really worth it to stay at a school were my gpa is ok and has the potential of getting worse in comparison to somewhere cheaper where I know I can maintain a better one? Should i salvage my gpa while I can?

What Is Good Career For Me To Go Into? I’m Deciding Between Becoming A Physical Therapist….?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 7, 2010
What is good career for me to go into? I’m deciding between becoming a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and physician’s assistant. Does anyone know if getting a masters in physical therapy would be sufficient or is a doctorate going to be required soon? Is going into the health field a bad idea with the potential universal health care?
Thank you!
