What would be a good career for me?
Posted by admin in Clinic Management on May 20, 2013
Question by Matthew: What would be a good career for me?
I am 16, but enjoy planning ahead. I was thinking about being a RN or physical therapist, but realized I suck at chemistry and all of that stuff. But, I am a very caring person, and enjoy helping people. I am good at almost anything I have an interest in, but am kind of bad at making decisions. I am also kind of shy.
I hope to move to Hawaii after I get out of college(if I go). I would like a job that has a lot of time off, but pays a lot of money too. Even though I haven’t done much stuff related to sports because I spent the last 6 years thinking I wanted to be a video game designer(horrible choice by the way), I am interested in sport/fitness related stuff.
I am good at writing stuff, taking pictures, music, cooking, and pretty much anything I have an interest in, but I haven’t thought about any of those for a career since I don’t really have an interest in careers that involve those.
I have dreamed about becoming a pro in a sport, but, I have yet to try a sport. I am planning on trying surfing as soon as possible though. I forgot if I mentioned it, but I do have an interest in fitness, and health related stuff. I also think everything through before doing it, and like to take things at a slower pace than most of my friends/family.I also feel at home in nature, and dislike city areas, but don’t mind being in them for short periods of time. Any ideas? Also, even though I am very patient, I doubt I could go to college for anything over 4 years.

Question by epic cupcake!: What Are some good places to go to study dance and dance therapy?
I would really like a career in performing dance (mostly lyrical/modern) however I needed a fallback. So i decided that i’d like to study dance physical therapy. Does anyone know some good places to study both?
thanks(:

You should know that there is no such thing as professional lyrical dance. That is only in small studios and competition dance. To study dance at a university you will have to audition and would need strong ballet technique as well as modern. That would be real modern such as Grarham, Horton or Limon techniques.
There are a number of great schools for dance P.T. Such as the Harkness Program which is housed at NYU.

Texas Back Institute in Plano is fantastic! Especially if you have insurance, it would be worth the drive. People from all over the world go there. That’s how state of the art their care is. No matter where you go, please, please don’t get caught up in all the super addictive pain meds-oxycontin, hydrocodone- all that horrible stuff. It WILL ruin your life. Do yoga, do physical therapy, do acupuncture, chiropractic, take Advil, Alleve, get massage, whatever, but don’t get caught up in the meds!
Good luck!

If I am interested in chemistry and how the body works/moves, would physical therapy be a good career choice?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on October 31, 2012
Question by Shelby: If I am interested in chemistry and how the body works/moves, would physical therapy be a good career choice?
I like the fact that physical therapists re-train a body how to move and figure out what is wrong with the body system. I’m not sure if physical therapy is the right choice and that’s why I’m asking.

You could also look into Kinesiology, the study of human movement, its pretty interesting too
Kinesiologists study all aspects (psychological, physiological, biomechanical, historical and sociological) of human movement in home, work, sport and recreational environments.
Duties and responsibilities vary considerably from one position to another in this multi-disciplinary field. For example, kinesiologists may:
design athletic equipment
manage sport facilities
provide assistance in sport management and promotion
provide leadership in community wellness programs
teach in schools
conduct fitness and mobility programs to reduce accidents among the elderly
conduct workplace assessments to reduce losses due to injury and to increase worker productivity
assess client fitness levels and assist in developing appropriate physical activity programs
assess cardiac patients and recommend appropriate levels of exercise
develop rehabilitation programs for people who have movement disorders
work with athletes to improve their fitness and performance levels
coach or train amateur or professional athletes.
Kinesiologists working in research may:
monitor patients while they go through an exercise program to test the efficiency of their heart and lung systems
use electromyography, biofeedback machines, slow-motion film and videotapes to conduct assessments and testing
study the mechanisms of fatigue during movement
study the biomechanics and motor control of human movement
study factors that affect commitment to fitness and rehabilitation programs.
Kinesiologists often work closely with other health and sport professionals.
