Do you think I’ll be able to work or am I going to be disabled?

Question by Amber: Do you think I’ll be able to work or am I going to be disabled?
I’m a 40 year old woman. I was in car accident in Aug 09, and fractured lumbar 1. Had bone fusion surgery in Dec. Went back to work ( a little too early, but needed $ ) in end of Jan. Two weeks later I had increased pain. Had a MRI = bulging disc of Lumbar 5. Dr started physical therapy and pain meds. A month later, my left side of body (arm and leg) had numbing and weakness with left leg dragging. MRI = bulging disc of C4 and C5 with spurring and bulging disc of T3. Dr wrote order not to work so I only worked 4 months since car accident in Aug 09. Dr started Lyrica and have traction even after his statement that “these bulges aren’t significant enough for your symptoms”. Done traction for 5 weeks and the pain in my lumbar section and NOW cervical and thoraic. Dr says to stop physical therapy and referred me to pain management clinic (in Aug). I have pain daily since the accident. Doing house chores and taking care of my kids are an effort plus the meds make me tired. In your experience, do you think I will be able to return to work?

The answer depends on what type of work you do. If you can work mostly at a sit down position, even on a computer, you may be in a good position to go back to work.
If however, your work involves you standing, lifting, walking etc.. then you should not work at that job. You should look into getting some sort of disability.
Have you tried Yoga? If you have not, it may be also a good idea to enroll in a Gentle Yoga class. Consult with your doctor first before getting into the practice; however, yoga has been known to cure many ailments, including back/neck pain due to buldging/dislocated discs.
What do you think? Answer below!
Advice On Going Back To School?
I have a two month old son and would like to better myself by going further with my education. I made good grades in school but got into the partying scene and did not graduate. I did get my G.E.D. I am 21 now and am raising my son by myself with no father in his life so I would like to financially be capable of doing it alone. I am interested in physical or occupational therapy assistant and possibly down the road a physical or occupational therapist but need to now how to get started and make it happen. Maybe online courses with having a baby even though I know alot of it will be hands on training. Advice please?

Is There A Hospital Or Clinic That Would Sponsor Me In Going Back To Respiratory Therapy School In San Diego?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on January 28, 2010
I have over 20 yrs of experience in respiratory therapy but I left the field in 1998 due to a physical problem, since the my license has lapsed, i am looking for a hospital that would sponsor me in going back to school to get my license renewed. I really want to get back into the field. I am not in a good financial situation right now so it would be difficult for me to pay for going to school. I hope someone can help me. I prefer the san diego area since that is where I currently live.
Physical Therapy: Going Back To School At 39 Years Old.?
Ok, So 2nd Q. I’m 39 years old. I’m a licensed massage therapist in NYC and would like to go to school for PT. I don’t have my undergrad degree. I have a 1.5925 GPA with 33 hrs that are passing out of 54 hours from when I tried to get my undergrad at UT Texas in Austin in 95. My undergrad major was deaf education. So now I have been an LMT for the past 4 years, since 2001. Have 1500 hours of massage training from Swedish Institue in NYC and Austin Massage school in TX combined. Reason to go back to school is to get a secure job that will give job security and health benefits in the work force. Questions: Should I go back to school when it will take me about 7-9 years for this degree, I’ll be 50. Should I just continue in massage knowing well I won’t be able to do this in my later years? What do I need to do to start the process in going back to school? I’m in NYC and looking at the San Francisco (UCSF/SFSU) or Texas State in San Marcos. All feed back would be appreciated.

Interested In Going From Massage Therapy To Physical Therapy?
I’m a licensed massage therapist in SC and am interested in becoming a physical therapist. I need info on: can I use massage education towards this and how much more would I need. Any legitimate info would be greatly appreciated. Have done some research myself but wondered if anyone has done it and could pass on advice. Thank you.
What Is Going To Happen To The Real Estate Agents?
I am just now getting my feet off the ground after being out of the job market for more years than I care to say because of three back surgeries that left me in chronic pain. After several years of physical therapy I am going to attempt to do real estate either sales or appraising? I am not sure what is going to happen to the job market in that area? I know it will get hurt, but how bad will it get hurt, is my question. Any input would be interesting.
Going Into Physical Therapy Without A Formal Education In Physics?
I’m going into 3rd year psychology at McGill’s Faculty of Science. I’m interested in possibly pursuing a career in physical therapy.
I’ve completed the following relevant courses:
1. 2 terms of general chem.
2. 2 terms of gen. bio
3. 2 terms of calculus (freshmen level)
4. 1 summer term of physics (i.e. equivalent to half year course). I dropped the second term of physics because summer courses are terribly structured…:P
I’ll be taking org chem, another year of bio, and a year of intro physiology. My physio prof was able to waive the physics requirements (because i’m taking it as an elective) but suggested that it may be more difficult to understand the concepts without a foundation in physics.
I understood the first term of physics decently, but am just reading through the material covered in the second half on my own. Basically, I’m reading up on electricity, fields, etc to get an idea (but I’m not motivated enough to do all the math…)
Would this coverage of physics be too superficial to learn introductory physiology and would this be too shaky of a foundation to go into physical therapy?
Is it enough to know the physics concepts — or is my lack of mathematical training in these concepts problematic?
