Question by madeline4477: what should I do about low back pain?
I have had low back pain for the past eight years. I have gone to my family dr several times, taken physical therapy, seen a chiropractor. nothing seems to help. In the morning I am so stiff and sore that I can not even stand up straight. I am wondering if I shoud go to a pain management clinic but I am not really sure what they do. would like some suggestions please thanks

Will I ever be able to go back into heavy exercising?

Question by CC Curious: Will I ever be able to go back into heavy exercising?
I was injured in car accidents. In one accident I think I was knocked out, and began to vomit profusely. I had to be observed. I don’t even remember my head hitting the dash, as was evidenced by the red mark on my face. Now years later the injuries can be seen, so far they can only see 2 degenerated discs, I have found that osteo arthritis can take at least 10 years to develop, I have also been told I have arthritis, scar tissue, and at one time been told I can’t exercise because it could flare up my muscles; I suspect that the discs and scar tissues are flaring up the muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons. The pain is up and down my spine, neck vertebrae, and causes headaches. I am being referred to physical therapy and pain management clinic and having a follow up with my doctor.
Those times when I exercise these days, it seems to make it worse, and so does the weather. But there were times I exercised in certain periods over the years and felt fairly good….
This is a chronic condition and will probably last me my whole life.
But I have read that if I strengthen the muscles enough, they will keep the joints from rubbing together (and in turn I am hoping keep them from pressing on other parts like muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues). My problem is I have so many days I can’t exercise because of the pain, fear of the pain, and the aftermath of the pain. Sometimes I do something that I think should not hurt me, and it does!!! :’( And my body sprains so very easily. The pain gets so back it makes me sick and have migraines and tension headaches and zaps away a lot of my life when it gets really bad. Sometimes it feels like I’m not even really living.
Will I ever be able to have my life back and do martial arts and practice gymnastics like I used to? If I strengthen my back and stomach muscles enough, wouldn’t that give me the strength to stretch my body out to relieve some of the pain? Do I have to live my life through the meds all time

Advice On Going Back To School?
I have a two month old son and would like to better myself by going further with my education. I made good grades in school but got into the partying scene and did not graduate. I did get my G.E.D. I am 21 now and am raising my son by myself with no father in his life so I would like to financially be capable of doing it alone. I am interested in physical or occupational therapy assistant and possibly down the road a physical or occupational therapist but need to now how to get started and make it happen. Maybe online courses with having a baby even though I know alot of it will be hands on training. Advice please?
Pell Grants Or Other Help To Go Back To School?
My 20 year old daughter is looking to go back to school to continue her education. I am hearing different things on the grants now available to return to college if you choose. She already has her massage therapy degree however that doesn’t seem like it’s a great field any longer. She is now looking into Physical therapy. Has anyone looked into any of these grants now available or have any insight as to where we can look to get the ball rolling. I told her to go to the school and talk to the financial advisor but I would also like to be educated on the different options before doing that. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Chronic Lower Back Pain Tried Everything, Ideas?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 9, 2010
My husband has chronic lower back pain as a result of an injury many years ago. MRI shows nothing other than slight fluid in the facet joints. We have tried physical therapy (which made it worse), chiropractic, multiple anti-inflmmatory pills, steriod injection into the back, burning the nerves, pain management clinic, Vicadin, and various opiate based drugs. it is so debilitating he can’t work- a simple walk through the grocery store is almost more than he can handle and he has a pretty high pain tolerance. Sitting is also uncomfortable. He can’t hold our baby unless he lays down because he is afraid of dropping him if a spasm hits. This has been going on for a year now and has had a major negative impact on our lives. Has anyone else dealt with a similar problem and did you ever get a diagnosis and treatment that worked?
What Are Some Good Alternative Medical Therapies For Back And Neck Pain?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 6, 2010
I have a herniated disc, a bulge in another part of my back or neck, my neck is straighter than it’s supposed to be. My back and neck muscles are all knotted up effecting my motor skills in my legs, weakness in my limbs, I have pain that spreads from my lower back and wraps around my abdomen.
I’ve done physical therapy twice, what they call manipulation, just of full body PT massage, I’ve gone to a chriopractor. I have an apoint at the med rehab clinic in a month. My doctor said I may possibly have to get a cortosone shot. What are some other options? I heard they can put the disc back in place, or surgery. I’m scared about all 3 because of the pain. Has anyone tried massage therapy or accupuncture? Do I have any other options?
Can Getting An Epidural Lead To Back Pain Later On After Child Birth?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 5, 2010
I’ve been having chronic moderate to severe back pain for around 10 months now. After many ER and Doctor visits, I’ve had almost no answers except one Doctor who mentioned it sounded like it may be from the epidural, which my pain didn’t begin until almost a year after having my daughter. They sent me to a pain clinic who then sent me to do physical therapy. The physical therapist noticed I had scoliosis which I wasn’t aware of because all I have ever been told was that I had a slight curvature of the spine. No one has directly told me I had scoliosis. I know they asked me if I had it before I got my epidural and I said no of course…Anyway I guess the pain may have took awhile because of scar tissue building up and maybe messing with some nerves..but my mid to lower spine just aches as well as having some fiery pain directly to the right of my spine in that same area. It’s worse when the weather is gloomy and the only thing that feels good is to bend over and arch my back and let my arms dangle. I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions…
Hi There,,im A 50 Year Old Man, Who Suffers From Chronic Low Back Pain.?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 5, 2010
I have had 2 back surgerys, discsectomy and spinal fushion, I still have severe low back pain, and the pain goes down my leg often. i have suffered with this for over 8 long years now. I see my doctor, and he gives me vicodin ES, and soma. but these medications no longer work for me. I have never abused my medications, however, I am reluctant to tell my doctor, because doctors often think you just want stronger medication. ive been to pain clinics, and have had epiderals, and have been to physical therapy, all have had no effect on my pain whatsoever. in fact, they made it worse for me. I am totally at my wits end, on what to do next. My doctor tells me I will be in pain for the rest of my life. So is there anybody out there that could advise me on what my next course sould be? I dont mind being on medication, and I dont want any further surgery on my back. (not yet, becides, theres no guarentee of that doing anything) I cant seem to find any relief, and I need help.thanks
Florida Health Care: Mri Denied For Back Troubles?
Posted by admin in Careers in PT on February 2, 2010
I have had severe episodes with my back and have had pain for the past 2 months now. I’ve been to my primary physician twice and he will not send me for an MRI. He has sent me for physical therapy and now a pain clinic without diagnosing the problem. I feel I have ruptured a disc. He says he can only send me for an MRI if I lose mobility in my legs or lose control of my bladder. I am PAYING for insurance…. I am on Florida Health Care. Is this normal, because to me, it sounds ludacrous! What can I do to get to the root of my back problems without breaking my bank account?
Thanks.
