Magnetic wrist strap
Magnetic devices have been used for arthritis for centuries
Copper bracelets and magnetic wrist straps are useless for relieving pain in people with arthritis, say University of York researchers.
In the first tightly controlled trial to look at both alternative therapies, there was no benefit to their use for pain or stiffness.
All 45 patients tested a copper bracelet, two different magnetic wrist straps, and a demagnetised version.
An arthritis charity said people should not waste their money on the therapies.
Study leader Stewart Richmond, a research fellow in the Department of Health Sciences, said there had only been one other randomised controlled trial – comparing the treatment with placebo – on copper bracelets and that was done in the 1970s.
Although there is a big public appetite for non-drug treatments from arthritis patients, we would not encourage them to spend a lot of money on products for which there is very little scientific evidence
Jane Tadman, Arthritis Research Campaign
Read your comments here
The market – particularly in magnetic devices which can cost £25 and £65 for the wrist straps – is worth billions of dollars worldwide.
In the trial, 45 people aged 50 or over, who were all diagnosed as suffering from osteoarthritis wore each of the four devices in a random order over a 16-week period.
They were all ineffective in terms of pain, stiffness and physical function, the researchers reported in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine.
Placebo effect
“It appears that any perceived benefit obtained from wearing a magnetic or copper bracelet can be attributed to psychological placebo effects,” said Mr Richmond.
“People tend to buy them when they are in a lot of pain, then when the pain eases off over time they attribute this to the device.
“However, our findings suggest that such devices have no real advantage over placebo wrist straps that are not magnetic and do not contain copper.”
He said the marketing of the devices was often to vulnerable elderly people.
Jane Tadman from the Arthritis Research Campaign said although many people with arthritis wore copper bracelets, there was no current research that supports their use.
“Although there is a big public appetite for non-drug treatments from arthritis patients, we would not encourage them to spend a lot of money on products for which there is very little scientific evidence,” she added.
The charity is in the process of compiling a report on the effectiveness of complementary therapies and arthritis.

He is the stay at home partner but has a fear of going anyplace without me. I have to work because I’m the breadwinner. On weekends he’s really brave about leaving our apartment and we love to go to the beach or the park. The problem is that he will never go to those places alone without me accompanying him. Sometimes I feel like his mother but I really don’t mind because I love him soooo much. On Sunday we were at the beach and I needed to use the restroom. It’s usually a fairly fast trip, go in sit down , take care of business and leave again. This time there were some females preening and carrying on and doing who knows what and they held everyone up. I had to wait in line and when I got back he was shaking and looked a mess. He practically jumped at me and started tearing up and said he was really worried about me. I asked him why didn’t he go over to the building with the restrooms and he said he didn’t feel like getting up. He feels safe driving to the market and to his bi weekly therapy appointments but will not go anywhere else Without Me.
He was sexually and physically abused by his step father from childhood through adolescence. I met him in the 9th grade and I wanted my parents to let him live with us because the physical and mental abuse was done openly. He recently disclosed the Horrors of the sexual abuse which no one knew about before. My parents refused for legal reasons to allow him to stay with us. When we both graduated from high school I decided that I was going to take him away from the horrors that we expreirnced and we immediately got married.
I was thinking instead of short walks could he meet me at McDonalds or Burger King which are about half way home from my work. I could call him when I am leaving work. I walk to work and home becasue my job is alow paying clerical job in a law firm and we try to save anyway we can. McDonald’s I believe has iced tea so it would not cost too much for him and I to buy drink there. Plus it would be fun to share a drink together like two love sick lovebirds lol lolo.

I have a bachelors in business and want to go to grad school. The problem is that I am really really not sure about which grad schools to consider. I was thinking about an MBA, Law School, and even physical therapy.
Problem is that my GPA is only slightly above 3.0 and have not been able to get a lot of good work experience over the past 2 years due to the economy. I am sure that I would want to go to grad school though. I find the employment market for people holding just a bachelors and little experience just too tough.
Could somebody please provide me with some advice into which grad schools I should look with more detail?
Thanks

I just turned 35 and I am wanting to start a new career. I took the ASVAB and all of my section scores are over 114. I am interested in the National Guard Reserves. My recruiter has told me that I have qualified for any job. However, I want a MOS that will transfer to a high paying civilian job ( with continued education of course).. I have been told to go for either …25B, 68W,68A,68P…I know that with 68W its very broad and the only job I would be interested in would be 68W-N9 ( Physical Therapy )..The others MOS’S I have interest in but I just want to make a decision that will have a financial benefit and a stable job market…( P.S.) National Guard and army reserves you qualify into your 40′s , just incase you thought I was to old,lol

I tried nursing but failed miserably so I got a health studies degree instead. I am a certified pharmacy technician at CVS.
So now I am wondering where to go from here. I am great with computers but I would prefer to stay on my feet and mobile. I will start the physical therapy assistant program in the fall and I am on the waiting list for radiology technologist which was what I really wanted to do. I have all of the prereq’s for both.
I am debating if I should take a fast ekg course and just wait for radiology instead. But I also run into the problem that the job market for rad techs is horrible. I love human anatomy and I am turning 23 this summer so I don’t want to wait forever for a decent job. Any advise would be great. Thank you!

About 6 weeks after I started NuvaRing (May 08), I started having severe back pain. But in that 6 weeks, I had also a minor accident with my horse, leading my Dr’s to assume the pain from was that. After a whole year of steroids off and on, muscle relaxants, MRI’s and even physical therapy (ALL of which did absolutely nothing), I decided to chart the “flare ups” of pain.
I realized that every time I had a flare up, I was on week 3, about to start a period. Every time, without fail. When I googled “nuvaring and back pain,” I found tons of other women experiencing similar pain. All said when they went off NR, it went away eventually.
My bottom line question is, how long does it take for these hormones to get all the way out of the system? One month? Three? This is the end of my 2nd full week off the NR and the back pain has returned full force, but exactly the same days as before- for example, if I were to start a period next week, the serious pain would start Thursday/ Friday the week before.
When my Dr.(not my regular Dr, but another member of the same practice) put me on it, he told me it was the gentlest BC on the market- now I know this to be completely the opposite.
Thank you very much for any helpful answers- or even just similar stories!

FRUSTRATED! 4yrs ago or so i visited an ortho that ran an mri and then handed me a referral told me he couldnt do anything for me… this was the largest ortho outfit in the city that handles the pro football players etc…. theyre all about marketing… why they wouldnt handle my disc injuries is beyond me.. im glad though because i couldnt understand the dudes broken english lol… anyway, i thought why is he sending me too pain mgt ie. pain pill mill…. they arent in any innovative in surgical techniques.. in fact, i had too obtain a printout from a pharmacist describing new meds like 15mg, 30mg oxycodone tabs that contain zero tylenol… the pain doc argued that i was wrong and that he was giving me 10mg tylenol loaded percocets 10x a day.. no way! he said they didnt make 15,30mg stuff.. anyway, im on 10 of the 15mg oxycodones a day and im tired of pills.. im tired of lyrika ( anti seizure med used for nerve pain) im tired anti inflammatories…. part of this is due too the fact that ive exhausted physical therapy, epidural injects, chiro care, and all im doing is graduating each year on pain meds to a stronger dose… ive been offered fentanyl, oxycontin, methadone, none of which i wish too endure… never! i dont know anymore if a pain pill clinic is for me? the top doc is an ortho surgeon and if you ask me, a man with a hammer will hit anything that looks like a nail… just like this dude, hes an awesome caring doc but hey, is surgery the answer? everyone ive met thats had back surgery, from laminectomies to minimally invasive laser disc jobs all are still eating pain meds and in pain….. how does a patient know what is best for treatment options? if i go too an ortho, he wants the knife… if i go too a pain clinic, they hand you oxycontin, if i go too a laser procedure joint, they will say laser me! is there really a way too heal and live a normal life after disc injuries? eating pain meds and visiting the doc for more rx’s is where im at… ive seen athletes come back and play pro football after disc injuries and i doubt they are living on oxycontin ea day… is their a solution of fix for disc injuries? surgery worries me, i know its just a 50/50 shot and they hope it works.. ive yet too see anyone say theyve had a successful procedure and quit pain meds… so do i accept that im on pain meds for the rest of my life and live with it?
i would like too get in a gym and exercise, aerobics, light weights? is this out of the question? working out/exercising and bodybuilding was daily thing for me.. i competed and now here i sit… woohooo! percocets! o boy! any atheletes out there?
