I need to summarize this paragraph and don’t know how. Just started school after 17 years of break and don’t remember ever summarizing any article. Never had to do any in bilingual classes. Please help!!
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that leads to the breakdown of the cartilage in joints. In people with osteoarthritis, exercise helps maintain good joint health, manage symptoms and prevent functional decline. But studies have shown that the benefits of a structured exercise program are short-lived. The beneficial effects usually fade soon after participation in the program ends. The occupational therapy program in this study was designed to educate osteoarthritis patients about joint protection, proper body mechanisms, activity pacing, and environmental barriers. The participants of the current study were divided into two groups. The first group participated in a structured exercise program and the occupational therapy program. The second group participated in the same exercise program, but received health education in place of the occupational therapy. Only the group that engaged in occupational therapy increased the intensity of
physical activity at the end of the study.

Understanding scientific studies can be difficult, so here is my recommendation:
“Previous studies have demonstrated that the effects of a structured exercise program in those with osteoarthritis are short-lived. Benefits decline once the physical activity declines. Yet, in a study comparing the effects of structured exercise combined with either occupational therapy or education in individuals with osteoarthritis, examiners concluded that occupational therapy had greater influence on activity level as compared to those who received education. This implies that occupational therapy may be beneficial to supplement a structured exercise program for individuals with osteoarthritis.
I am not an English major, but I am a PT…this is the point I feel the study is trying to make.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, causes cartilage breakdown in joints. exercise helps maintain good joint health . Benefits of a structured exercise program fade soon after the program ends. This occupational therapy program educates about joint protection, proper body mechanisms, activity pacing, and environmental barriers. Two groups in study. The first had structured exercise and occupational therapy program. The second had the same exercise program, but health education in place of occupational therapy. Only the first group increased physical activity at the end of the study.

Well, it seems to me that the group with the best results (at the end of the paragraph) would kind of be the summary of how best to deal with osteoarthritis. You might want to include a “summary” of the disease also, but mostly what seems to be the “answer” to controlling the disease.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that breaks down joint cartilage. It has been found to decline in patients who choose to exercise regularly.
