im wondering…… i am SO SCARED of when i get older because i have cystic fibrosis (was diagnosed at 8 months) and i am now 14. i have a fairly healthy life. in physical education in school im NEVER at the back if we have cross country. im more like at the top of the middle. the last time i was in hospital with a really bad cough was when i was about 9. i haven’t had any serious infections in a long time. i keep having antibiotics every 3 months. im never out of breath. i sometimes go through days without a little cough. even when i do, nothing comes up. more or less a dry cough. im just very scared when im older as people with cf haven’t got a long life-span.
i don’t want to die young. how bad is my condition for cf? i hardly ever need physio therapy. i do well in sports. i ride horses A LOT and i am an advanced rider. i have my own horses. how bad is my condition?
thanks!

I have a friend who is 36 years old, and has cystic fibrosis. He is in very good health, just as you are, the only thing that sounds different is that he occasionally has to do postural drainage. It sounds as if you are taking very good care of yourself, and sound very healthy given the circumstances. I hope everything goes well for you! Good Luck!

i have a daughter of 2 with cf who has not long been diagnosed. from what you are saying it sounds like ur doing all the right things, exercise is better for the lungs than physio so keep it up. My daughter has to have antibiotics twice a day orally and antibiotics twice a day through a nebuliser, physio twice a day vitamins once a day and also has to have the enzymes when she eats. i know this illness can be scary coz it scared me half to death to leatn my daughter had it but keep ur chin up and keep doing what ur doing it sounds like ur doing good to me. If u ever need someone to chat to feel free to e-mail me i will help u if i can. stay well xxx

A relative of mine has CF and for the last 10 years associated diabetes. She also has to take enzymes with her food.
she’s in her mid-40s and can out-walk me – distance and speed!
Occasionally a cold develops into a chest infection necessitating antibiotics.
You are young, fit and very positive. Don’t be scared, there are lots of people 3 times your age who are very active, enjoy life.
All Good Luck, you sound lovely. xxx
Don’t forget too that medical knowledge leaps ahead year by year.

You are very lucky and must have a less severe form of cystic fibrosis. Glad to hear you are well.Keep up the exercise and you will live a long healthy life.

Hi my 11 year old has cystic fibrosis and is in a much worse state than you. She becomes breathless with running etc. You are doing all the right things to keep your lung functions high which is really good. Enzymes are needed by the majority of CF sufferers. As long as your weight gain is also OK you sound a really good CF!!! My daughter has 3 monthly IVs!! i assume you have never been diagnosed with psudomenes??? The main problem with CF is that things can change really quickly however if you keep up with what you are doing then you should lead a long happy life!!! A lot of the time if you start worrying then you loose the will to do all your strict routines so just chill out and enjoy your life. When my daughter was diagnosed there was a man aged 60 with it!!! Also ask your CF Dr or CF nurse what they think and tell them about your concerns they can tell you about any lung scarring etc or even any concerns that they may have. Also talk to your parents about your worries. They have a lot of information from the Dr and specialists and will probably know what state your CF is in
